What’s with the waxed bag?

We have chosen waxed cotton canvas as the material for our bags and accessories (the loop key ring) due to the durability and water resistant properties. We wanted our bags to be family friendly, sturdy and durable, and at the same time avoid plastic as much as possible – we all know where that ends up.

Our large waxed canvas bags can be used as a beach bag, gym bag, yoga bag, weekend adventure bag, picnic bag, take-the-kids-to-sports bag, shopping bag – the choice is yours.

History of Waxed Canvas

We can thank seafaring men for developing one of the oldest materials in the world still used today. The sailors noticed that wet sails caught better wind, but the added weight of the wet sails slowed their boats. Depending on where in the world the seamen lived they applied either fish oils, grease or linseed oils to their sails, resulting in waterproof cloth (lighter sails in wet weather).

Over time the way of application and the type of wax changed.

Being water resistent, the waxed canvas spread to military use – and was the fabric of choice for clothing the British Armed Forces during WW2. They utilised the waxed canvas for uniforms, tents and bags because of the water resistancy and durability.

It wasn’t until after WW2, waxed canvas was used in commercial products: heavy duty rain wear and motorcycle clothing and today it is used in clothing, shoes, bags and camping gear.
